what everybody knows

tonight i went to family dinner at my dad's house.  i brought some of my guides to disney world to help start sparking the excitement for our trip next may.  I've been to disney world 9 times and listen to several podcasts on wdw each week and feel i know the parks very well, but i forgot that not everybody is as familiar with wdw as i am.  we will be staying at the pop century resort and my brother asked me how do we take the monorail to the parks from our resort.  i had to break the news that the monorail is very limited and we would be taking buses or our cars, but it really showed me that i have a lot to teach them before we head off. alright bro lets start with this, it's called birnbaum's.

The best worst picture

On my last trip to Disney world my wife an I ate at kouzzina on the boardwalk. It was a great meal but the highlight of the night was an unexpected celebrity sighting. As we stood around waiting for our table to be ready a tall figure exited the dinning room. I knudged my wife, but she had no idea who it was. It was legendary imagineer Joe Rohde. I asked if I could get my picture taken with him an he nicely agreed. Unfortunately the flash was off so the picture didn't turn out great but the memory of the encounter was priceless to me.

on stranger tides review

my wife and i have been big fans of the pirates of the caribbean films, so when the latest episode hit the theaters we were very excited to see it.  unfortunately our schedules didn't allow us to catch the film until it had been out for two weeks, which meant we had to listen to other people in our lives give their opinion before we saw it. they all said the same thing that it was just like the other films and thus they found it boring.

well now that i've seen it i have to say they were right, it was just like the other films, but duh shouldn't it be.  don't you want familiar characters acting in familiar ways, otherwise why would you see a sequel. if you want a new movie go see a new movie. if you want the characters you love see the films that have them in it.

don't get me wrong there are new characters in this film and they fit in well with the established characters.  the one casting that could have been slightly better in my mind was that of penelope cruz as angelica. not that she did a bad job, but i felt that maybe selma hayek might have been a good choice as she may ahve been able to bring a little more comic timing than did penelope.

overall i loved the movie though.  it fit in with the rest of the films, it wasn't a total rethinking of the series as some sequels try and do.  and to those who think it was too much like the first three, perhaps you need to go watch the bourne trilogy and see how similar those films are.
